Yoga is an ancient science designed to unite mind, body, and breath. The first documented yoga postures are around 3000 years old found in an excavation in India.
The original intention of the ancient yogis and yoginis was to attain the heightened state of consciousness which some call enlightenment. These days we are more familiar with the physical benefits of yoga, toned body, quiet mind and even breath.
The lineage of teachers which Clare follows is that of Sri Krishnamacharya. Krishnamacharya lived in the last century. He was responsible for teaching some of the foremost teachers, for example Mr BKS Iyengar, Pathbhi Jois - the founder of Ashtanga Vinyasa Flow Yoga and his own son TKV Desikachar.
The physical practice of yoga which makes up the majority of a yoga class today is called Hatha Yoga this includes the postures called asana and the breathing practices called pranayama.
In one of the original Hatha Yoga manuals, The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, it is said that the only way to learn about yoga is to start practicing yoga!!!
Namaste.
